The starting point and the client’s goal

The client had previously bleached hair and already had visible highlight lines. They wanted a fresh placement with more depth and dimension, together with a warmer colour direction that still carried a subtle ash softness. The agreed target was a smooth, softly blended honey blonde.

From existing warm highlights to soft honey-blonde dimension

The Before image shows existing lighter pieces over a darker base, with uneven warmth through the lengths. The After result shows a softer honey-blonde direction with clearer dimension, blended contrast and a glossy finish.

Rebuilding dimension instead of simply making the hair lighter

The design focused on creating new lines that would sit more naturally through the existing lightened areas. Rather than chasing maximum brightness, we balanced light and shade so the finished colour would look dimensional from the back.

A five-hour service using 3% developer

The complete appointment took approximately five hours, including placement, the lightening process and care steps. For this Asian hair case, Oilly used a 3% developer with the lightening process. The 3% developer was selected after assessing the existing bleach history, with the aim of reducing unnecessary damage and helping the hair retain firmness, flexibility and easier combing.

Long-term hair condition is part of the colour design

At Oilly, the result is not judged by colour alone. We also consider how the hair feels during shampooing, whether it tangles easily and how the condition may affect future appointments. Every client still needs an individual assessment because previous lightening, porosity and elasticity can change what is appropriate.

Finishing care with Oilly Laurel Oil Hair Mask

Care was included throughout the service and finished with our rinse-out Oilly Laurel Oil Hair Mask. This intensive treatment helps the hair feel softer and smoother, supports shine and helps retain moisture after chemical services. It is a finishing-care step, not a promise to reverse existing damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can previously bleached hair have a balayage refresh?

Sometimes. The existing lightening history, porosity, elasticity and current condition must be assessed before deciding the placement and processing.

Why was 3% developer used in this case?

It was selected for this client’s Asian hair and previous bleach history to support controlled lightening and reduce unnecessary damage. It is not a universal setting for every client.

How long did this honey-blonde balayage take?

The complete appointment took approximately five hours, including placement, the lightening process and care steps.

What makes this honey blonde look dimensional?

New placement was designed around the existing highlights so light and shade could create depth rather than making every section equally bright.

What care was used after the colour service?

The service finished with the rinse-out Oilly Laurel Oil Hair Mask to support softness, shine, smoothness and moisture retention after chemical work.
