Foil, Foam or Root Shadow?
If you are considering Baby Highlights, the technique matters as much as the photo you show your stylist. Foil, foam / meche and Root Shadow create different brightness, softness and grow-out results, especially on previously colored or fragile hair.

Often chosen for softer, low-contrast Baby Highlights when the goal is fine shimmer rather than bold stripes. Hair condition still needs assessment first.
Root Shadow / Root Smudge
Can soften the root area and make grow-out look more natural. It is optional, not required for every client.

Root placement: close to the scalp or softly away from the root?
Highlights placed very close to the scalp can grow out more seamlessly, but they are not always the best choice for every face. If the light pieces come too close to the hairline, some clients feel that the face loses its frame. A slightly softer root placement can keep the face shape clearer while still giving visible highlight lines. We choose the placement based on your face frame, personality, styling habits and how natural you want the grow-out to feel.
Highlights for grey blending
Fine highlights can also help soften new grey or white hair. Instead of covering every root with a dark colour, the lightened lines can mimic the scattered pattern of new greys, reducing the hard contrast between white roots and dark colour. For some clients this extends grey-cover maintenance from a short root-touch cycle to 3–4 months, and in selected cases even longer with a softer brown root refresh.

What is the difference between highlights and balayage?
Highlights usually use foils or controlled sectioning to create consistent lightened pieces. Balayage is painted more freely for a softer gradient. At Oilly, we may combine both ideas depending on whether you want clear shimmer lines, baby highlights, face framing, or a softer grow-out.
Are baby highlights better than chunky highlights?
Baby highlights are finer and more blended, so they usually look softer and grow out more naturally. Chunky highlights can be beautiful when the goal is a bold fashion statement, but they become more obvious as toner fades. Oilly often recommends shimmer or baby highlights for clients who want elegant dimension that lasts.
Can highlights help blend grey or white hair?
Yes. Fine highlights can imitate the scattered pattern of new grey or white hair, reducing the sharp contrast that happens when white roots grow against dark root colour. For many clients, this makes grey maintenance feel softer and can extend the time between root services.
Should highlights be placed close to the scalp?
Not always. Close-to-scalp highlights can grow out smoothly, but on some face shapes they can remove the natural frame around the face. A slightly softer root placement keeps the face frame clearer while still giving visible highlight dimension.
Which hair conditions need assessment before highlights?
Hair with repeated permanent straightening, repeated perms, heavy dark colour build-up, dark colour shampoo, multiple chemical services, or strong frizz needs assessment first. In these cases, lightening may create unclear lines or make the hair feel drier and fuzzier.
Do I need purple shampoo after highlights?
If you want to keep ash, beige or cool blonde tones, purple or anti-yellow shampoo can be used about 1–2 times per week depending on the colour. Overusing it can make the hair too grey or dry, so we explain the correct frequency after the service.
Can I combine highlights with keratin or Hair Botox?
Sometimes yes. For light to medium frizz, keratin or Hair Botox can make highlight lines look smoother, shinier and easier to manage. If the hair is already fragile, we assess the safest order before combining services.
