Full-Head Baby Highlights to Blend More Than 70% Natural Grey Hair in Bangkok

This client had more than 70% natural grey mixed with pigmented strands, while the previously lightened lengths showed slight frizz and a soft natural wave. Rather than covering every white strand, Oilly designed a full head of micro-fine Baby Highlights to echo the natural grey pattern and connect it more softly with future regrowth.

STARTING POINT

Natural white and grey strands with a soft bob shape

DESIGN

Full-head micro-fine, diffused Baby Highlights

FINISH

Ash-blonde dimension with no root colour or root shadow

The Starting Point: A Majority-Grey Pattern with Previously Lightened Lengths

The client arrived with more than 70% grey and white hair interspersed with naturally pigmented strands. The lengths had been lightened before and showed some frizz with a slight natural wave. The aim was not opaque grey coverage. The client wanted the newly growing white strands to feel connected to the colour design rather than separated by a hard line.

Micro-Fine Baby Highlights Designed to Echo Natural White Hair

Oilly created very fine Baby Highlights across the full head, using the natural white strands as a visual guide. Distributing the lighter lines throughout the hair helped the existing grey and the highlighted lengths read as one softer pattern. Most sections were placed close to the scalp. Around the face, a small gap was retained at the root so new growth could connect more naturally with the existing white strands instead of forming a rigid edge.

A Condition-Led Lightening and Toning Process

The Baby Highlights and toner took approximately 4–5 hours. A 3% developer was chosen for this client as part of a gradual, controlled approach to previously lightened hair, with conditioning care used during the service. A lower developer strength does not make lightening damage-free. Suitability still depends on the current condition, previous chemical history and how each section responds during the appointment.

The Result: Softer Grey Integration as the Roots Grow

The finished colour turns the client’s natural grey into part of the design. Fine highlighted strands create dimension through the lengths while reducing the visual contrast between new growth, white hair and the previously lightened base. This placement is intended to create a softer grow-out and reduce the need for frequent all-over root coverage, although maintenance needs will vary with growth, condition and the preferred finish.

Finishing Care and Haircut

The service was completed with Oilly Laurel Oil Hair Mask to add softness, smoothness and shine, followed by a haircut to refine the overall shape. The case was designed and performed by Oilly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Baby Highlights blend grey hair without colouring the roots?

Yes. In this case, the natural root area stayed visible and micro-fine highlights were placed away from a tight root position to connect the existing white strands with new brightness.

Why was no root shadow used?

The client wanted to retain her natural root and white hair rather than add a deeper artificial band. The diffused highlight pattern created the transition without a root shadow.

Will the highlights look like obvious stripes?

The design uses varied spacing, very fine lines and controlled negative space. This avoids a uniform chunky pattern and helps the highlights echo natural white hair.

Is ash-blonde the right toner for every grey-blending case?

Not automatically. Toner direction should be chosen after assessing the natural grey pattern, starting colour, hair condition and preferred finish.
