Real Client Case Study

Hair Repair After Permanent Straightening, Bleached Ends & Grey Coverage

One type of case that requires a very careful assessment from a hairstylist is hair that has previously gone through permanent straightening and repeated chemical colouring to cover grey hair. Hair in this condition is often dry, fragile, prone to breakage, and uneven in its underlying tone. This is the story of how we approached one such case at Oilly Hair Salon Bangkok.

Before & After

A real transformation from our salon in Sathorn, Bangkok. The goal was not to chase the brightest possible blonde — it was to bring the hair back to a healthy, wearable colour while protecting what was left of its strength.

Before Before hair repair at Oilly Hair Salon Bangkok - bleached coppery ends with dark grey-coverage regrowth, dry damaged texture
After After hair repair at Oilly Hair Salon Bangkok - glossy dimensional ash brown blended with the natural root tone

Faded coppery balayage, heavy dark regrowth and dry, damaged ends — rebuilt into a glossy ash brown that blends naturally from root to tip.

Hair Assessment Comes First

In this case, before starting the service, we carefully checked the client’s hair condition, including hair strength, dryness, elasticity, and previous colour buildup. This allowed us to plan the safest possible hair colour approach.

For hair that has been bleached or chemically treated multiple times, lifting the hair lighter in one session can carry a higher risk. This is especially true when the hair has already become weak or when some sections are more damaged than others. If bleaching is forced without proper assessment, the hair may become even drier, more brittle, or more difficult to repair later.

Therefore, in some cases, a stylist may not be able to achieve a result that looks 100% identical to the reference photo in just one visit. The final result does not depend only on the colour the client wants. It also depends on the original hair base, previous chemical history, hair strength, and the current level of damage. This is why we recommend an honest colour correction consultation before any major change.

Our Priority: Colour That Protects the Hair

What we care about most is creating a better hair colour result while protecting the hair quality as much as possible.

During the process, we chose a gradual approach and adjusted the tone carefully. We also added treatment, Olaplex, and other nourishing products throughout different steps of the service to help reduce dryness and roughness, leaving the hair softer and smoother after colouring.

Why we use Olaplex during colour services: Olaplex helps rebuild the broken disulfide bonds inside the hair shaft that bleach and chemical colour break down. Adding it directly into the colour mix and as a separate treatment step protects already-fragile strands from getting weaker during the service. For damaged hair like this case, it is one of the most important tools we have.

Why We Chose This Tone — Not the Lightest Possible

For this case, we chose a tone that blends naturally with the client’s real hair colour at the roots, instead of forcing the previously bleached ends to become too light. This is because the natural root area and the chemically treated ends have different conditions and underlying tones. If the colour contrast is too strong, the hair can easily look dry, damaged, and unnatural.

Choosing a tone that blends well with the natural root colour helps the overall hair look softer, healthier, and fuller. It also makes the hair easier for the client to maintain at home. The colour does not look too harsh or overly dry, and it creates a better foundation for future colouring if the client wants to gradually adjust the look or go lighter in the next session — for example, transitioning toward a soft balayage once the hair has recovered.

Why Colour Correction Takes Longer

Sometimes, colour correction or damaged hair repair may take longer than a regular colouring service because the stylist needs to keep checking the hair condition throughout the process. It cannot be rushed like healthy hair. Taking more time does not mean the service is slow; it means we are working carefully to minimise risk and protect the hair as much as possible.

For clients with hair damaged from bleaching, repeated colouring, permanent straightening, or multiple chemical services, we recommend viewing hair recovery as a process, not something that can always be completely fixed in one day. Some cases may require two to three sessions or more to gradually adjust the colour, rebuild strength, and help the hair look healthier and more natural again. Our advanced bond-rebuilding treatments are often part of this longer-term plan.

Home Care After the Service

After colouring, home care is also very important. Hair that has been damaged before is more likely to become dry again and may fade faster than healthy hair. We recommend:

  • Using a sulphate-free, colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner suitable for colour-treated hair
  • Adding a weekly bond-repair or moisture mask at home (Olaplex No.3 or equivalent)
  • Avoiding high heat from styling tools — and always using a heat protectant when blow-drying or using irons
  • Trimming the very ends every 2–3 months to prevent split ends from travelling further up the hair
  • Coming in for a professional in-salon treatment between colour appointments

Our Philosophy

At Oilly Hair Salon Bangkok, we believe good hair colour is not only about making the colour look beautiful on the first day, but also about considering the long-term health of the hair. This is especially important for clients who need colour correction, damaged hair recovery, or hair repair after multiple chemical services — including those who regularly need grey coverage or grey blending.

If you are not sure whether your current hair condition can achieve your desired colour, we recommend having a consultation with our stylist first. We will assess your hair base and condition, then plan the most suitable hair colour and repair approach for you ❤️
