Black Hair Color Removal and Honey Brown Ash Balayage in Bangkok

Years of very dark, almost black colour on long hair, and a wish for something fresher. Oilly lifted the built-up dark pigment with her own colour-removal process rather than traditional bleach, protected the hair with bonded care throughout, and finished with a honey brown ash balayage: soft sun-kissed ribbons through the mid-lengths and ends and brighter pieces around the face.

Starting point

Long hair dyed very dark for years, almost solid black from roots to ends, with no visible dimension and a heavy, flat look.

Approach

Strand test first, then colour removal without traditional bleach in one or two rounds depending on the dye history, bonded care at every step, and a honey brown ash balayage painted through the mid-lengths and ends.

Result

A soft, dimensional honey brown ash balayage with a shadowed root, brighter face-framing pieces and hair that still looks healthy and moves well.

The Starting Point: Years of Near-Black Dye

This guest had coloured her hair very dark, almost black, for years. From the back the before photo shows exactly that: long hair in one solid dark tone from roots to ends, with slight waves but no visible dimension. She was ready for something fresher and asked for a balayage in honey brown ash, a shade that would harmonise with her skin tone and give a soft, sun-kissed highlight effect instead of the heavy, flat black she had been keeping for so long.

Moving from solid dark dye into a brighter balayage is never a one-step shortcut. Built-up artificial pigment has to be lifted carefully, so the first job was to listen: to her colour history, the condition of the hair, and the look she actually wanted to live with.

Why Colour Removal Instead of Bleach

Long-term black or very dark brown dye holds layers of artificial pigment that ordinary lightener struggles with: uneven lift, orange tones and heavy structural damage. That is why black-dyed hair at Oilly always goes through colour removal first. A colour remover lifts the artificial dark pigment gradually, without applying a standard bleach, which helps protect the overall condition of the hair.

Two things are true for every black-dye case. The number of rounds depends on how easily the old colour releases: clients who have dyed dark for many years may need one or two rounds, others only one. And the final tone cannot be promised in a single session; the plan is built around what the hair can safely do that day, with the look refined over future visits if needed. For the full route, see colour correction in Bangkok and the balayage service.

The Approach: Strand Test, Colour Removal, Bonded Care, Then Balayage

  • Strand test. Every black-dye appointment begins with testing one strand so Oilly can see how the previous dark dye reacts before committing to the whole head.
  • Colour removal without traditional bleach. The built-up dark pigment was lifted with Oilly’s own colour-removal process rather than standard bleach, in the number of rounds the hair needed.
  • Bonded care at every step. Carefully selected professional products and bonded care treatments were worked in throughout both the removal and the balayage phase so the hair kept its strength and softness. The colour removal + balayage package on the price list includes Epres treatment.
  • Balayage placement. Honey brown ash ribbons were painted through the mid-lengths and ends with brighter pieces around the face, leaving the root area softly shadowed so the grow-out stays natural.
  • Built to be refined. The placement was designed so the look can be built on over future visits instead of forcing every change into one appointment, and each step was explained before the next.

The Result

A honey brown ash balayage with soft, sun-kissed highlights through the mid-lengths and ends. From the back the placement reads as one luminous, dimensional tone: fine ribbons melting from a shadowed root through the lengths, with visible shine and loose waves. From the front the lighter face-framing pieces brighten the complexion and give the whole look a fresh, healthy glow. The hair still looks healthy and full of movement, easy to wear straight or styled.

Before and After

Both photos are taken from the back. The aim was to move from a solid dark-dyed base into a soft, dimensional balayage without putting the hair through traditional bleach.

Aftercare and Upkeep

Do not wash or wet the hair for the first two days after colour. After that, a sulfate-free shampoo, a weekly bonded mask and a periodic toner refresh keep the honey ash quality, because the ash side of the tone softens first and the hair drifts warmer over the weeks. With a shadowed root there is no hard regrowth line, so many balayage clients return after around 4 to 6 months for the next lightening. Is Black Dye Removal with Balayage Right for Your Hair?

A good match if:

  • You have dyed your hair black or very dark brown for a long time and want a softer, brighter version without going blonde.
  • You want sun-kissed dimension and face-framing light that grows out without a hard line.
  • You accept that the result may be built over more than one visit if your dye history needs it.
  • You want hair that still feels healthy afterwards, not just lighter in a photo.

Usually needs a different plan first:

  • You want to go from black dye to blonde or a very pale ash in one visit: that is not realistic on built-up dark pigment, and forcing it damages the hair.
  • Your hair is already fragile from previous bleaching: repair care comes before any colour removal or lightening.
  • Your hair was dyed with henna: it also needs colour removal first, henna pigment can react unpredictably to lightening, and the final tone cannot be promised in one session.

Send a photo of your current hair on LINE or WhatsApp and mention how long you have been dyeing dark; Oilly will tell you how many rounds are likely and what tone is realistic before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can black dyed hair be lightened without bleach?

Yes, with a colour remover rather than standard bleach. At Oilly, black or dark brown dyed hair always goes through colour removal first: the artificial pigment is lifted gradually, which protects the hair structure better than bleaching through built-up dye. A strand test comes first, and the final tone cannot be promised in one session because it depends on how easily the old colour releases.

How many rounds of colour removal does black dye need?

It differs for everyone. In this case, and in general, clients who have dyed dark for many years may need one or two rounds, while others need only one. The strand test and the way the hair responds on the day decide it, and if the hair cannot safely take another round the plan continues at a later visit.

What is honey brown ash, and is it the same as honey ash brown?

They describe the same family of tone: a soft brown with the warmth of honey and enough ash to stop it reading orange. On a dark Asian base it gives a neutral, skin-friendly brightness without looking obviously blonde or obviously warm, which is why it works so well as the first balayage tone after black dye.

How much does black hair colour removal with balayage cost in Bangkok?

At Oilly Hair Salon in Sathorn, colour removal + balayage with Epres treatment is ฿7,500 to 11,500. A later balayage refresh without removal, Balayage + Olaplex, is ฿5,500 to 8,500, and a toner alone is ฿1,000 to 2,500. The final price depends on length, thickness and how many removal rounds the hair needs, and is confirmed in the salon before the service.

How long does a honey brown ash balayage last and what is the upkeep?

With a shadowed root there is no hard regrowth line, so many balayage clients return after around 4 to 6 months for the next lightening. The honey ash tone softens and drifts warmer over the weeks, so a toner refresh in between keeps it fresh. Do not wash or wet the hair for the first two days after colour; after that use a sulfate-free shampoo and a weekly bonded mask.

Can I bring reference photos for the colour?

Yes, reference photos or a preferred colour direction are very welcome. The final colour still depends on skin tone, makeup style, lifestyle and the hair's own history, so Oilly adjusts the reference to what suits you and what your hair can safely reach. Send the reference and a photo of your current hair on LINE or WhatsApp before the appointment.

Ready to Leave Solid Black Behind?

Oilly Hair Salon works by appointment in Sathorn, Bangkok, five minutes from BTS Chong Nonsi. Send a photo of your current hair and your reference tone on LINE or WhatsApp first; your dye history and hair condition are checked in the salon before the service so the removal rounds and the balayage tone can be planned realistically.
