The Starting Point
Before this service, the guest’s hair was a uniform dark brown that had been maintained with repeated root coverage. As more grey hair came through at the roots, the contrast between the new growth and the dyed length was becoming harder to disguise. She wanted to step away from constantly chasing dark roots and move toward a softer, brighter result that still felt natural for her skin tone and lifestyle.
Our priority at this stage was to listen carefully and plan a realistic, healthy path. Going from solid dark to a lighter balayage on previously colored hair always needs to be done patiently, especially when the long-term goal is graceful grey blending rather than a single dramatic change.
The Approach
For this case, we used a soft, diffused balayage technique with carefully blended highlight placement. Instead of bold contrasting streaks, the lighter ribbons were melted through the mid-lengths and ends so that the new tone reads as a gentle brightening rather than an obvious color change. This way, as fresh grey hair continues to grow in, it can blend more naturally into the existing balayage instead of standing out against a flat dark base.
Because the hair had been previously dyed dark, we planned each lightening step with restraint.
