The challenge: connecting new grey roots with existing blonde
Before the service, the dark natural roots and newly grown grey and white strands stood apart from the existing warm blonde through the mid-lengths and ends. The difference in depth made the line near the roots more noticeable than elsewhere in the hair.
The goal was not to cover every grey hair with opaque colour. Instead, we used very fine lighter strands to bridge the natural roots and the previous blonde, creating a softer, more intentional result with added dimension.

Oilly worked with very fine Baby Highlight sections distributed across the full head. This avoids heavy streaks or bands of high contrast. Each placement was designed to work with the natural grey pattern and existing blonde rather than making every section identical in size and spacing.

Slightly off-root, with no root touch-up or Root Shadow
The highlights in this case were not placed directly against the scalp. We intentionally left a slight gap and softened the placement to preserve the natural roots, without adding root colour or a Root Shadow.
As new grey hair grows in, the off-root placement and diffused pattern can help soften the appearance of a hard line between the regrowth and previous colour. How soft the transition looks—and when a refresh is appropriate—will still depend on each person’s grey pattern and preferred level of brightness.
A gradual lift using 3% developer
For this case, Oilly used 3% developer during the lifting process to work in a gradual, controlled way and avoid placing unnecessary stress on the hair while creating many fine sections. The stylist monitored the hair’s condition and response throughout the service rather than relying on strength as a shortcut.
