Balayage

Balayage is the art of painting light into hair by hand. Unlike traditional foil highlights, balayage creates a soft, natural gradient — darker at the roots, gradually brighter toward the ends — as if your hair has been kissed by months of tropical sun. At Oilly Hair Salon, balayage is one of our most requested services, and for good reason.

Why Balayage?

Balayage is French for “to sweep.” The technique involves hand-painting lightener directly onto the hair surface, creating a seamless blend with no harsh lines or obvious regrowth. The result is a lived-in, low-maintenance color that looks natural from day one and continues to look good for months.

Whether you want a subtle warmth through your brunette base, a dramatic blonde transformation, or rich caramel tones woven through dark hair, balayage gives your stylist the creative freedom to customize every stroke to your unique features.

Balayage Looks We Create

  • Classic balayage — soft, sun-kissed gradient from mid-lengths to ends
  • Beige blonde balayage — warm, sandy tones for an effortless beach look
  • Caramel balayage — rich, warm dimension on dark brown or black hair
  • Ash balayage — cool, smoky tones for a modern, editorial feel
  • Ombre balayage — more dramatic contrast from dark roots to light ends
  • Baby-light balayage — combining fine foils with hand-painting for maximum dimension

The Process

  1. Inspiration & Consultation — Share your vision. We analyze your natural base color, skin tone, and lifestyle to design a balayage pattern that flatters and suits you.
  2. Hand-Painting — Your stylist carefully paints lightener onto selected sections, controlling the intensity, placement, and blend by hand. This artisanal approach is what gives balayage its signature natural look.
  3. Processing — The color develops openly or under film depending on the desired lift. We monitor continuously to ensure even, beautiful results.
  4. Toning & Glaze — We neutralize and refine with a custom toner: beige, champagne, ash, honey — whatever shade brings your balayage to life.
  5. Treatment & Finish — A keratin or deep conditioning treatment seals in moisture. We style and finish so you walk out looking and feeling amazing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is balayage suitable for dark or black hair?
Yes! Balayage is particularly beautiful on dark hair because the contrast between the natural base and the lightened pieces creates stunning depth and dimension. We work with dark hair regularly and know how to lift it safely while achieving gorgeous warm or cool tones.
How long does balayage last?
One of the biggest advantages of balayage is its longevity. Because there is no harsh root line, the grow-out is very natural. Most clients can go 4–6 months between appointments, making it one of the most low-maintenance color options available.
Balayage vs. highlights — which should I choose?
If you want a soft, natural, low-maintenance look with no visible grow-out line, balayage is ideal. If you prefer more uniform brightness or all-over lightness, highlights may be better. We are happy to combine both techniques for maximum dimension.
Can I get balayage if I have previously colored hair?
In most cases, yes. We assess your hair’s current condition and color history during consultation. If there is old color buildup, we may recommend a color correction step first to ensure the balayage turns out beautifully.
How long does a balayage session take?
A balayage session typically takes 3–4 hours for a full application including toning and treatment. Partial or touch-up balayage can be done in 2–3 hours.
