Trendy Copper Hair Color After Box Dye: Correction in Bangkok

Short, layered hair that had been coloured at home with a dark foam box dye was taken to a bright, even copper. Because the old pigment had to come out first, Oilly carefully performed two rounds of lightening, then applied the new copper colour, working nourishing repair treatments in at every step to protect the hair's structure.

Starting point

Short, layered hair in a flat dark brown from DIY foam box dye, with the client wanting a trendy, vibrant copper.

Approach

Colour correction: two careful rounds of lightening to remove the old box-dye pigment, then the new copper colour, with nourishing repair treatments at every step.

Result

An even, bright copper finish with a healthy, restored shine on a short, soft-textured cut.

The Starting Point: Dark Foam Dye From a Box

Short, layered hair that the client had coloured at home with a foam box dye. The result was a flat, dense dark brown with no dimension, and box dye is applied over the whole head, so the old pigment sat through the lengths as well as the roots. The client wanted to move to a trendy, vibrant copper. The challenge with box dye is that the dark pigment is deposited heavily and unevenly, so it does not lift cleanly in one go, and new colour applied over it simply disappears.

Why Box Dye Needs Correction Before Copper

A bright copper has to sit on a base that has been lifted to a warm orange-gold. On natural dark hair that is one controlled lightening step. On box-dyed hair it is harder: the artificial dark pigment resists lifting, comes out unevenly, and often reveals bands where the dye overlapped on earlier applications. Pushing through all of that in a single strong round would damage short hair badly, so the safer route is more than one gentle round, with repair in between, and that is exactly what this case needed. It is the kind of planning that separates a colour correction in Bangkok from a simple colour change.

The Approach: Two Rounds of Lightening, Repair at Every Step

  • Assessment. The box-dye history, the build-up through the lengths and the condition of the hair were checked to plan how many rounds the hair could take.
  • Double-process lightening. Two careful rounds of lightening were performed to remove the old foam-dye pigment, each taken only as far as the hair could safely go, rather than one aggressive round.
  • Nourishing repair treatments. Hair repair treatments were incorporated at every step, between and around the lightening rounds, to protect the hair’s structural integrity.
  • Copper colour. Once the base was lifted evenly, the new copper colour was applied to reach the bright, fresh tone wanted.
  • Finish. The short layers were dried with soft texture to show the colour’s movement.

The Result

A bright, even copper with a healthy shine through the short layers. The flat dark box dye is gone, with no visible bands from the old applications, and the copper reads light, warm and fresh in daylight. The hair still feels strong and smooth after two lightening rounds, which is the point of building repair treatment into every step: corrective colour work can leave the hair feeling healthy and looking beautiful in Bangkok.

Before and After

The aim was to lift the home foam dye safely and reach a copper that looks bright and even, not patchy, while keeping short hair feeling strong.

Looking After a Corrected Copper

Do not wash or wet the hair for the first two days after the service. Because the base is now lightened, copper will fade faster than it would on uncoloured hair: wash less often with cooler water and a sulfate-free shampoo, and a copper colour-depositing conditioner helps between visits. A toner refresh in the salon restores the brightness when it softens, and a repair treatment between colour appointments keeps lightened short hair in good condition. Above all, avoid reaching for another box dye: a dark box over this copper would put the hair back to square one.

Is Copper After Box Dye Right for Your Hair?

A good match if:

  • You have coloured your hair dark at home with box or foam dye and want to move to a bright, warm fashion shade.
  • You want the change done safely, in as many rounds as the hair needs, with repair built in rather than added afterwards.
  • Your hair is short or mid-length, so a corrected copper is quick to style and easy to refresh.
  • You are happy with a brighter, warmer copper that needs a toner refresh every several weeks.

Usually needs a different plan first:

  • Hair dyed black or with henna: the dark pigment has to be removed first, and the final tone usually cannot be reached in one session.
  • Hair that is already breaking or stretchy from earlier bleaching: repair care comes before any lightening.
  • You want copper with no lightening at all: on a dark box-dyed base, colour alone will not show, so a no-bleach route is only realistic on a light or natural base.

If you have box dye on your hair and want to go copper, send a photo of your current hair in daylight on LINE or WhatsApp before booking; Oilly will tell you how many rounds are realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go from dark box dye to copper in one session?

Sometimes, if the hair is strong and short, as in this case, where two rounds of lightening and the copper colour were done with repair treatment at every step. Heavier dye build-up, black dye or fragile hair usually needs the lifting split across more than one visit so the hair is not pushed too far in one day. Oilly confirms this after assessing the hair.

Why does box dye need two rounds of lightening?

Box dye deposits dark artificial pigment heavily and, after several home applications, unevenly through the lengths. It resists lifting and comes out in patches. Two gentler rounds, with repair in between, lift it more evenly and with less damage than one strong round, and give the clean warm base a bright copper needs.

How much does copper hair colour correction cost in Bangkok?

At Oilly Hair Salon in Sathorn, colour with one round of bleaching and treatment is ฿3,000 to 7,500. For hair previously coloured black or dark brown, full colour removal with Epres treatment is ฿5,500 to 9,500, with additional rounds applied when needed. Length, thickness and how easily the old dye releases affect the final price, which is confirmed before the service begins.

How long does the copper last after correction?

On a lightened base, copper typically softens over several weeks of washing. Do not wash or wet the hair for the first two days, then use cooler water, a sulfate-free shampoo and a copper colour-depositing conditioner. A toner refresh brings back the brightness, and regrowth on short hair can be handled with a root touch-up rather than a full re-do.

Will lightening box-dyed hair damage it?

Lightening always affects the hair, and box-dyed hair is more at risk because the pigment resists lifting. That is why the rounds are kept gentle and repair treatments are worked in at every step. If the hair is already weak from earlier bleaching, repair comes first and the colour change waits.
