Songkran 2026 is almost here — and if you’re staying in Bangkok for the three-day water festival (April 13–15), your hair is about to take a beating. Between chlorinated water pistols, sun exposure on Silom and Khao San, and non-stop humidity, a week of Songkran can undo months of hair care. This guide from our Sathorn hair salon covers exactly how to protect your hair before you step into the water, what to do the moment you get home each night, and when to book a recovery treatment at our Bangkok salon.
Why Songkran Is So Hard on Your Hair
Bangkok’s Songkran water fights look like harmless fun, but three things stress your hair at the same time:
- Chlorinated tap water. Most water guns are refilled with municipal water, which contains free chlorine. Chlorine binds to keratin and strips color, especially on balayage and highlighted hair.
- UV exposure. April is Bangkok’s hottest month — UV index often hits 11+. Colored hair oxidizes fast in direct sun; even virgin hair turns brittle after two or three days outdoors.
- Mentholated talc powder. The white paste people smear on faces and into hair contains menthol and kaolin clay, which draws oil and moisture out of the hair shaft.
Combined, this is why we see a 3–4× spike in color-correction and bond-repair bookings the week after Songkran at our Sathorn location.
Before You Go Out: Pre-Songkran Prep
1. Saturate with clean water first
Dry hair absorbs chlorinated water like a sponge. Before you leave your hotel or condo, soak your hair with clean filtered water — even better, add a leave-in conditioner. Wet hair can’t absorb as much chlorine, cutting color fade roughly in half. This is the single most effective step and it takes 30 seconds.
2. Seal with oil — not just any oil
Apply a light coat of argan, jojoba, or a silicone-based serum from mid-length to ends. This creates a hydrophobic barrier that slows chlorine absorption. Avoid pure coconut oil in direct sun — it can oxidize and cause further damage. Our team recommends products with cyclopentasiloxane or dimethicone for maximum protection during Songkran.
3. Braid or bun it
Tangled wet hair is far more fragile than loose hair. A French braid, low bun, or twisted ponytail reduces friction from water-gun blasts and keeps strands aligned so you’re not ripping through knots at the end of the day. For long hair, this also prevents the ends from getting sun-bleached.
4. UPF hat or scarf
A wide-brimmed hat or a light silk scarf is the best UV shield. Even a ball cap protects the scalp and parting line from burning (yes, scalp burns happen in Bangkok). If you’ve just had color done, this matters even more — fresh color is photosensitive for 2–3 weeks.
Every Night: 5-Minute Recovery Routine
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water — not hot. Hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates color washout.
- Clarifying shampoo, once. A single clarifying wash removes chlorine, talc, and street grime. Don’t use it for the whole festival — twice over three days is plenty.
- Deep conditioner, 5–7 minutes. Apply from mid-length down, never on the roots. A bond-repair mask (Olaplex No. 3, K18, or similar) works best during Songkran because it rebuilds the disulfide bonds that chlorine has broken.
- Air dry when possible. Heat styling on already-stressed hair is compounding damage. If you need to blow dry, use a heat protectant and a low setting.
- Silk pillowcase. Less friction, less frizz, fewer split ends.
After Songkran: When to Book a Salon Treatment
Even with perfect prep, three days of Songkran adds up. Here’s how to tell what your hair actually needs:
- Color looks faded or brassy → book a toner or gloss within 7 days. Waiting longer means deeper color correction.
- Hair feels straw-like or stretchy → bond damage. Book an Olaplex or K18 treatment immediately.
- Frizz and dryness only → a deep-conditioning repair treatment will handle it.
- Split ends everywhere → a dusting cut at our Sathorn salon removes damage without changing your length.
Pro tip: the week after Songkran (April 16–20) is our busiest of the month. Book ahead if you can. Our English-speaking stylists see dozens of post-Songkran recovery clients every year and know exactly which protocol to use.
For Travelers: Songkran Hair Salon Tips in Bangkok
If you’re a tourist staying near Silom, Sathorn, or Asoke, a few practical notes:
- Most hair salons in Bangkok are closed April 13–15 (public holiday). We’re typically open but with limited hours — check our Google listing for the 2026 schedule.
- Bring your regular shampoo if you’re in a hotel — complimentary hotel shampoo is often harsh and adds to the damage.
- Don’t get color or keratin done during Songkran. Book it either 10+ days before, or wait until after April 16. Fresh color in Songkran water is a nightmare.
- BTS Chong Nonsi is our nearest station (3-minute walk). Easy access from Silom, Sala Daeng, and Lumphini hotels.
